It wa
s
Christmas of 1970 when Tim acquired his first drum kit. It was a small Tele-Star
set that didn't live very long. Between Tim's hyperactive destructive disorder,
four brothers, and dozens of neighborhood kids all banging as hard, fast and
loud as they could on them, it is amazing they lasted a few months. Although
Tim desperately wanted more drums, and to take drum lessons, his mother insisted
he learn a "real" instrument and enrolled him in piano lessons.
After learning music theory
from years of piano lessons
and
playing trumpet in high school band, Tim eventually went back to his childhood
dream of being a drummer. He got a used 5-piece set of Mercury drums for $95
in the summer of 1977 and shortly after he added four CB 700
concert toms. At this time Tim started taking piano and drum lessons from a
local musician named Darryl Myers. Mr. Myers was the son of a professional jazz
drummer and a great teacher of basic rudiments and technique as well as being
a killer pianist. Tim spent the next few years putting in many hours o
f
drum practice. Much of that time was spent with the headphones on playing to
groups such as Led Zeppelin, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Rush and more Led Zeppelin. At
age 20, Tim landed his first drumming job with a real band that had a real gig.
"Uncle Willies Bluff" was a cover band that played country, rock and oldies at a
private club in Jasper, Alabama
called the "Blackwater Rod and Gun Club."
From the first
set of that debut gig Tim had the "stage bug" and mu
sic had become
a way of life. Bigger and better things soon came as Tim hooked up with many
outstanding working bands over the years to follow. Now, after 20 years of banging
the pots and pans, Tim's solid metering, hammering fills and strong lead and
backing vocal abilities have made him a highly sought after player around central and north Alabama.
